Women in Construction Anglia

GC Robertson recently took part in the Women in Construction event at Suffolk New College, a day focused on celebrating achievements and encouraging more women to explore careers in construction and engineering.

The event welcomed industry professionals, students, and future talent to engage in hands-on activities, hear from trailblazing women, and take part in powerful discussions about the future of the industry.

GC Robertson was proudly represented by our very own Anna-Maria Staines (HR Director), Tatty Houchell (CAD Technician) , Fran Wright (Administration Assistant), and Holly Peirson (Structural Engineer), who joined the panel to speak about her involvement in a recent all-female Design and Build project. Alongside fellow female panellists, Holly shared insight into the unique experience of delivering a project led entirely by women.

The day kicked off with a challenge to build the tallest freestanding structure using only marshmallows and spaghetti, highlighting the importance of creative thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration.

Later, attendees heard from Katie Kelleher, the UK’s first female crane operator apprentice, who gave an inspiring talk about her career journey, setbacks, and achievements. Her story was a reminder of the resilience and ambition that continues to drive change across the construction sector.

After a lunch prepared by Suffolk New College’s hospitality students, the panel discussion began. Holly and the project team answered questions from the hosts and audience, giving attendees a real-world view of what’s possible when women are empowered to lead in construction.

At GC Robertson, we are committed to building an inclusive future for the construction industry. Supporting women like Holly, and participating in events that spark meaningful conversations, is just one of the ways we help shape a more balanced and representative workforce.

This event was a celebration of progress and a reminder that visibility and encouragement are key to bringing more women into engineering and construction.
